Catching up on your Long Slow Runs
I've been struggling a bit in trying to catch up my long run distances. It's easy to fall behind on your training and it's happened to me in the past more than once. This time, I have the benefit of some advice I heard on an episode of the Extra Mile Podcast. Jeff Galloway had addressed this problem with a pretty simple but very effective way to get caught up. In a nutshell, walk the difference of the distance your last long run and you scheduled run. Example: If your last long run (within the past 2 weeks) was 5 miles, and you're supposed to run 10 miles, walk the first 5 miles then run the remaining 5. By doing this, you effectively and safely get caught up on the missing miles. I've tried it and it works. As always, take as many walk breaks as needed and don't make a habit of missing too many long runs. I make it a rule to not miss more than 20% of my scheduled long runs.

Running with Zombies!
Sorry it's been so long since my post... sometimes, life just gets in the way! I have been getting back to a normal running routine though. I've been averaging between 10 and 15 miles a weeks for the past 5 or 6 weeks so I'm pretty happy with that. It has been terribly hot and humid and it has been a challenge getting out for runs so I've been hitting the treadmill.
When I do get out, I've been using this awesome new iPhone app called Zombies, Run! It's been very entertaining and helps me get my mind off the heat and humidity. The games is played by launching the app and clicking on the start mission button. You then select the playlist you want to listed to and you're off! During the run you'll get mission objectives when you first start then updates between the songs on your playlist. As you're running you'll also pick up items (virtually) you'll need to bring back to base and every so often you'll run into ZOMBIES! When this happens, you'll have to pick up your pace to avoid being caught.
I'm not doing it justice just by explaining it, you can check it out here:
Anyway, that's what I've been up to. I'm in the midst of putting together episode 19 of The Average Marathoner's Podcast so that should be up shortly.
